PEACE JOURNALISM PERSPECTIVE
EDITORIAL

Johan Galtung – TRANSCEND Media Service
As usual, many truths emerge, very much worth knowing. A world trying to substitute economic for military power should try to use better cultural power, also as spiritual power: “Pope Francis offers a different model of power”, with very very concrete proposals. May he reach the corridors of power; they are fortunate enough to co-exist in time with this giant.

The World after Trump, Netanyahu and Rajoy
Johan Galtung - TRANSCEND Media Service
Easter 2018 – We may soon be witnessing those powerful politicians fizzling out. Trump is seen as “unleveled”, “incompetent”; Netanyahu is framed as “corrupt”; and Rajoy for pillaging the state to support his party. However, true or not, the real reasons are their failed policies.

Nonviolence or Nonexistence? The Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Robert J. Burrowes, Ph.D. – TRANSCEND Media Service
2 Apr 2018 – Fifty years ago, on 4 April 1968, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The night before he died, King gave another of his many evocative speeches; this one at the packed Mason Temple in Memphis. The speech included these words: ‘Men for years now have been talking about war and peace. Now no longer can they just talk about it. It is no longer a choice between violence and non-violence in this world, it is non-violence or non-existence. That is where we are today.’
Syria Solidarity Movement’s Statement on the Liberation of Eastern Ghouta
Paul Larudee – TRANSCEND Media Service
28 Mar 2018 – The complete liberation of Eastern Ghouta is imminent. The Syrian government provided thousands of tons of humanitarian aid to the terrorist-held enclave, from which western-backed militias shelled the city of Damascus for a period of five years, killing over 10,000 civilians, including 1,500 children, and injuring over 30,000 others. During the liberation of Eastern Ghouta, the Russian air force and Syrian Arab Army declared several ceasefires during which tens of thousands of civilians were able to escape their terrorist captors and flee along humanitarian corridors created by the SAA on the ground.

Iran’s Gen. Qassim Solemani Pledges to “Weed the Resistance!” Is Nasrallah His Target?
Franklin Lamb – TRANSCEND Media Service
30 Mar 2018 – Since he became Tehran’s anointed leader of Syria in early 2012 with final say over Syria’s military and security agencies, Al Quds Force leader Qassim Solemani has been “Weeding the Resistance.” Solemani’s “Resistance Weeding” is also designed to help harvest his personal regional political ambitions and neutralize potential post-Assad competitors rumored to include Hassan Nasrallah among others.
Multilateral Iran Nuclear Accord Needs Strong Active Support
René Wadlow – TRANSCEND Media Service
2 Apr 2018 – The Multilateral nuclear accord with Iran, the Joint Comprehension Plan of Action, needs strong, active support especially within the US administration. The accord was negotiated among Iran and the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and coordinated by the European Union. The Accord was endorsed by the unanimous vote of the United Nations Security Council and went into force in 2016. Views on the importance of the continuing validity of the Accord should be shared widely among political representatives and foreign policy specialists.

Anthony Judge | Laetus in Praesens – TRANSCEND Media Service
2 Apr 2018 – Essential Impotence Disguised by Performance and “Being Great Again” – An increasingly prominent feature of national politics and identity is the promise of “being great again”, as variously evident. This is most notable in the nation already esteemed as the most powerful on the planet and has also been taken up in Great Britain, France, and elsewhere.
In the Shadows: India’s Mental Health Crisis
Moin Qazi – TRANSCEND Media Service
2 Apr 2018 – India is facing a possible ‘mental health epidemic’. “The number of affected in India is larger than the entire population of Japan. We need to address this gap and ensure that by 2022 at least those who are suffering from severe mental disorders have been diagnosed and have access to treatment facilities.”
Following Foucault: The Trail of the Fox
Prof. Howard Richards – TRANSCEND Media Service
A Kindle E Book on Amazon – by Howard Richards, with Catherine Odora Hoppers and Evelin Lindner, with a Foreword by Magnus Haavelsrud.‘I found this a truly fascinating work: timely, original, dynamic. There is such a huge secondary literature on Foucault; one is almost sceptical about new additions to the corpus. This, however, is certainly worth the read; partly because of the ways it also counters and contradicts many accepted ways of reading Foucault, especially on power.’
Dealing with Issues of Ageing and Death
Dr Ravi P Bhatia – TRANSCEND Media Service
2 Apr 2018 – If being born is the beginning of life, ageing or becoming old is metaphorically speaking, walking into the sunset of life. This sunset, unlike the phenomenon of the sun setting at dusk is not a beautiful sight but an occasion for anxiety and worry as to what will happen at the time of death.

31 Mar 2018 – I am writing this on Friday night, the eve of Passover. At this moment, all over the world, millions of Jews are gathered around the family table, observing the Seder, reading aloud from the same book: the Haggadah, which tells the story of the Exodus from Egypt.
Mazin Qumsiyeh | Popular Resistance – TRANSCEND Media Service
31 Mar 2018 – I am optimistic even though sad. I am sad that the Israeli regime massacred 17 and injured nearly 1500 unarmed Palestinian civilians yesterday instead of letting them go to their homes and lands to honor Land Day.
Roy Eidelson – TRANSCEND Media Service
20 Mar 2018 – In my new book I explain the psychology behind the success of today’s plutocrats in marketing their false claims—and what we can do to counter them. Offering a research-based framework, I show how the 1% exploit five fundamental concerns that govern our daily lives. Political Mind Games was written with a clear purpose: to help inoculate the public against the 1%’s self-serving appeals.
NONVIOLENCE
Shifting Systems with Nonviolent Strategy
Rivera Sun | PeaceVoice – TRANSCEND Media Service
The old adage, we have more power than we think, is true. Our opportunities for successful and effective struggle are numerous. But to access them, we need to use wise analysis and careful strategic planning. We need to understand what the destructive systems require to operate and then we must deny them those resources until the demand for change is met. Simple. Complex. Effective.

29 Mar 2018 – Remember that Muslim mass murderer who belonged to an Islamic home-madrassa called INTIFADA, where knife-wielding Shari’a survivalists studied the Qur’an, guns and dangerous chemicals? And how the liberal media fawningly portrayed him as a misunderstood and under-loved young man otherwise full of promise? You don’t, because that never happened. But have you heard about the Christian Texas child-killer from an all-white sect who slaughtered the president of a homeowners’ association and a 17-year-old aspiring neurosurgeon? Both victims were African-Americans.

Oxford’s Neo-Orientalism: Burma aka Myanmar
C R Abrar – The Daily Star [Bangladesh]
28 Mar 2018 – The People’s Tribunal on State Crimes of Myanmar unequivocally termed the atrocities committed by the Burmese government as “genocide”. The UN special rapporteur on human rights situation of the country has clearly stated that such actions bear the “hallmarks of genocide”. Without mincing his words, the French President Macron has expressed his disgust of Myanmar’s genocide. Even the unpredictable British Foreign Secretary termed it as “industrial scale ethnic cleansing”. The Holocaust Museum acknowledged it as a genocide and expressed solidarity with the victims. Nobel laureates Bishop Tutu and Amartya Sen have labelled it as “slow burning genocide.”
MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA
Cathy Breen | Voices for Creative Nonviolence – TRANSCEND Media Service
31 Mar 2018 – I was in Iraq for the month of October last year. One of the hardest things for me on that trip was the feeling I heard expressed that the country has become invisible. A doctor friend in Baghdad, his hurt palpable, told me he felt as though Iraq has been completely forgotten by the global community. War rages on in Iraq. Young boy Naomi Shihab Nye’s words should help bring us back to ourselves, fifteen years after the onset of the 2003 US-led war against Iraq. “Who calls anyone civilized?”

It was explicitly planned as a peaceful march along the border of Gaza and Israel, where tent cities are erected.

23 Mar 2018 – The “new media” monopolists of Silicon Valley and the once-dominant traditional print media have clearly agreed that the “fake news” frenzy is a convenient pretext to step up their censorship of the internet through new algorithms, allowing them to boost their profit margins and silence opposition through a new framework of “algorithmic censorship.”
Chris Hedges – Truthdig
18 Mar 2018 – The ominous assault on the final redoubts of a free press, through an attempt to brand dissidents, independent journalists and critics of corporate power and imperialism as agents of a foreign power, has begun. Those who challenge the dominant corporate narrative already struggle on the margins of the media landscape. The handful of independent websites and news outlets are the few platforms left that examine corporate power and empire, the curtailment of our civil liberties, lethal police violence and the ecocide carried out by the fossil fuel and animal agriculture industries, as well as cover the war crimes committed by Israel and the U.S. military in the Middle East.

The Reaction against the Reaction: The Voice That Is Raised against the Raised Hand
Juan Eugenio Corradi | Opinion Sur – TRANSCEND Media Service
23 Mar 2018 – Yes, they have come back, as if history has not inflicted them a chastisement. They call themselves populists but they are fascists from old and new strains. They are reactionary and popular. Against this movement, as always, what stand up are the voice of reason and the report of the lie that parades in the name of the people. As almost always, the voice of reason is impotent, except as testimony and warning. I want to add my voice to such voice. Against fascism, together with Miguel de Unamuno, we must say: “You will win because you have enough brute force, but you will not convince. To convince you need to persuade and to persuade you need something you lack: reason and right in the fight.”

30 March 2018 – In deep disgust, I wrote the poetry this afternoon after feeling rather outraged and dismayed at what I have been observing everyday about the “Rohingya crisis” over the last 6 years. Physician/author Dr. Gabor Mate began his interview by addressing the ‘myth of normal’ that divides us into the normal and the abnormal with pathological traits. He explains how mental distress and pathology are largely a result of a materialist culture that “idealizes individualism and ignores our emotional needs”.
